K&E slide rules. One of those beauties got me through an hour-and-a-half physics lab final to which I was one hour late, because they had changed the time and I had failed to note same, in 30 minutes - and damned accurately, providing me with a 95. They are to me what the New Testament in the shirt pocket that stopped a bullet to the heart is to a soldier. My college ass needed that 95.

Hey. Wait a minute! Does dee have a fan club now?

Binkey, she's had one for years now.

Well, I just bet that club doesn't have the caliber of members that our club has.

That would be a safe bet.

....

Chadwicke is bummed that the Wilkins Ice Shelf in Antarctica is crumbling like a sugar cookie and it's not even summer down there yet.

Yeah, well, Chadwyke should spend more time worrying about the things he can have a direct impact upon - like personal hygiene, for instance.

As diplomatic and subtle as Ann is, even she has noticed and mentioned that in passing.

Maybe we should just keep that to ourselves. After all, Chadwyke does have the advantage of owning a classic K&E slide rule and he sports plastic protectors in all his pockets. You know what a sucker Ann is for scientific gadgets.

Actually, I think she prefers not to be embarrassed by the people around her.

We're doomed, aren't we?

Doomed.

The Bushies are "national interests in our sphere of influence" asshole bastards to the very end. Morales is so morally superior to Bush as to render comparison as pointless as comparing Einstein intellectually to Sarah Palin.

God I hate our foreign policy toward any nation who would dare exercise self-determination other than what we think they ought to determine, foreign policy that all too often turns industrial homicidal, or as some apologists would have it, surgically homicidal, as was claimed regarding our military assault on Iraq.

I also loathe, of course, the utterly immoral misuse of our military, which does comprise many, many very decent Americans whose motivations are to try to do the right thing wherever they find themselves.

Today, November 29, 2008, is International Buy Nothing Day and we at the Church of Stop Shopping would like to appeal to all within the sound of my voice to stop shopping, dammit. Yea, I wish that Sister Savitri D had not bought all that Mad Dog 20-20 in anticipation of this global day of righteous celebration. Or more accurately, I wish I haven't found all those bottles of it while looking in the pantry for something to eat last night. Lord have mercy! (Ow! My head....)

11-29-08

Dear Diary,

Patricia showed me this article over breakfast this morning.

LA PAZ (Reuters) - Bolivian President Evo Morales accused the United States on Thursday of "political vengeance" for suspending the Andean nation's special trade benefits on grounds that it has not cooperated in fighting drugs.

Morales cited U.N. data to assert that Bolivia did a better job than Colombia and Peru in controlling the cultivation of coca, the main ingredient used to make cocaine.

I pretended this was all news to me and I questioned if that was really being fair to Bolivia. Of course, <strike>vice</strike> President Cheney was having great fun with this at the last cabinet meeting. He was describing this affront to Bolivia as "one final shiv up the chute" (a bad mental image here!) before he leaves office. As a rare show of patriotism over politics, Lynn Cheney promised to up Dick's lithium dosage through the end of the term. A little know fact - members of the executive wing of the government can get all the drugs they want, whenever they want them. It's probably a good thing that Cindy McCain did not wind up in the White House.

Oy! as my Jewish brethren say. Franco Zefferilli is gay? Who knew. Apparently everyone but me, though cluelessness about everyday ordinary life seems to be my cross to bear. Franco took exception to one of my recent homilies about going forth and multiplying in a heterosexual way - only. Also, the computer internets tube connection thingie was not actually from a wikipedia site. Except for Vinnie and Guido, Franco is my dearest friend and I fear I've hurt his feelings. I'll ask Archbishop Anselmo to have Franco over for coffee again tomorrow. Oy bist mir! I can be such a schmuck!

Franco Zeffirelli just emailed over a page about me in some new Wikipedia, whatever that is.

http://www.dickipedia.org/dick.php?title=Pope_Benedict_XVI

Hmmm...for some reason that didn't prove to be as flattering as I had imagined. Maybe it was something that I said to Franco. I'll have invite him over for coffee tomorrow morning and get to the bottom of this.

Did I mention I managed to get out of organizing it this year? Yay, me! I just get to bring my dish, eat and leave like everyone else for a change.

Don't you believe it for a second. When I walked into the fellowship hall this afternoon, dee was at the center of the vortex. There was never any question about who was in charge. dee, thanks for taking a few moments to chat. My in-laws' house is only about 5 minutes away from your church. I should stop by sometime and attend one of the services. I felt very much at home there. (And folks, dee looked terrific!)
