Dale,

My former colleague the history instructor would be most appreciative of the correction you offered. He does not suffer historical sloppiness lightly.

Who says babies don't come in the mail? Brides do.

Ahem, Carlos IV....As Cooper (and many others) have noted, I do not have much common sense or practical knowledge (the babies don´t come in the mail? How about UPS?).

However, if there is one thing I DO know, it is 17th century Spanish history, and that Carlos IV was NOT a Hapsburg (although given all the inbreeding, he probably was vaguely related). Carlos II was the last Hapsburg. Carlos IV was a Borbón (equally inbred and hapless, but more French).

Obama is inching toward 50% and McCain is slipping toward 40%. Too early for any definite conclusions, but this should have the McCainiacs very worried, since he is already a known entity and Obama is not, and the Obama campaign is proving more adept at defining both Obama and McCain than is the McCain campaign.

I think we will win on the issues - that's the easy part - but I think we are also winning on those issues that swing the swing vote this time, some of which are pretty superficial, but which are requisite to winning. So long as our team does not lie or use unfounded character assassination, I can accept the general necessities of winning. I do think we are going to win on about as high ground as it is possible to be on and still win, which will be a refreshing change from how Nixon-Rove succeeded in defining winning electoral politics.

Sorry, Chris, I didn't mean to stir up bad karma. It's just that this story is eerily similar to Newt Gingrich's demand that his wife sign the divorce papers while she was in the hospital bed, groggily recovering from cancer treatment.

The Republicans are the political party of family values and the irony meter was buried in the red. Plus, it's the whole character issue. He's waving the flag, recalling his imprisonment during the Vietnam War, which is admirable and admittedly, not many people could have survived that ordeal. But this is the other side of that same coin and maybe voters need to hear about that, as well as his heroics.

Not to be a spoil sport, but I don't know what happened between them. I'm divorced, and it took a lot less than a car accident and a stint as a pow to do that to me. I think articles like the above are truly slimy. McCain needs to be beaten because of the bankrupt ideas he is fronting, not because of personal turmoil decades in the past.

I don't know why McCain dumped his first wife. So when he came back from the Hanoi Hilton and she was 5" shorter because of her accident - Hell's bells what's the problem? I mean finally he was taller than his wife! Geez! Is he nuts or something?

I've been assigned by the McCain 2008 Campaign to come before this blog and to affirm, without any question of doubt, that the above story about Mr. McCain's alleged infidelity and wife swapping is completely without merit. I so affirm that that is true (wink).

OK. Now I know why they really got me out of the slammer. Bush is in Europe and is insisting on face time at the Holy See with "some kinder religious feller or sumpin'" and no one else can stand to be in the same room with him. I find him a textbook example of Hapsburg Syndrome - the end result of generations of blood-blue inbreeding. As long as he doesn't sit in one of the Papal waste baskets and roll himself around on the floor like the last time...
