I think your local fire dept. is supposed to be able to help you with the car seats... Right? Did I make that up?

Murray ... same thing happened to me in the back of a 1972 VW Microbus. We were driving down the onramp onto the Eisenhower Expressway, my brother and I sitting in the "way back" (actually, we called it the "very back," for some reason) by the back hatch, when the sumbitch opened right up, and out I went. Well, I went half-way out, to be accurate. Good thing my brother had quick reflexes. He pulled me in with one hand and slammed the hatch closed with the other.

Man, you can extort a lot out of your parents when they feel that guilty. On the downside, I'm indebted to my brother, like, for life, ya know?

Hey, driving was much more of an adventure back then.

Child seats. Most of the ones available when my children were of that age (35 years ago), were essentially bear traps. Consumers Report rated only one seat acceptable and we had to get it from a GM dealer. The others were flimsy metal seats designed to collapse in the middle and,.. well think bear trap.

When my younger brother was a couple of years old my father drove around a curve, the passenger door swung open and dad grabbed him by the leg as he was sliding out. I miss the good old days when survival was mostly a matter of luck.

Allegedly, there are some in the Republican leadership who have just realized how unelectable Oberweis truly is, and are considering trying to get someone else on the ballot in November. But they can't do that, right? Oberweis beat Lauzen in the primary; they can't just declare someoene else the candidate- it's not as though they're the Cook County Board.
It's been interesting too to read the exchange between Oberweis's daughter, who identifies herself as a liberal, and Eric Zorn, a Chicago Tribune columnist, about how hurtful the attacks on the family have been.

Aunt Sam, I have some clients out in your neck of the woods. I was talking with one who, I'm fairly certain, was a Hastert stalwart, who said he was really turned off by Jim Oberweiss' anti-immigration nonsense. I don't know whether he voted for Bill Foster, but he said he was considering it.

Anyway, I sure hope Foster keeps the seat come November.

At the same time, it's kinda entertaining to watch Oberweiss blow the family fortune on one failed election bid after another. Maybe he should run for president next time?

David~
We had a lot to make up for after what? seventeen terms of Hastert?

It'll be interesting to see what happens in November, when Bill Foster comes up for re-election after seven months in office. The responders in some of the local papers are foaming at the mouth, asserting that it's all the immigrants and young idealists who have moved from the city to the suburbs that gave the Dems the election. (One person actually wrote that once they realize it's the Repubs' policies that created the suburbs, they'll switch parties.)

I hope the local Democratic organization doesn't blow it. All my quiet Democratic friends & neighbors & I probably need to start volunteering now....

Aunt Sam,

That's your district? You've got to be bursting with pride. My representative is Tom Feeney, most beloved for heading up the Tom Delay defense fund, so I'm basically bursting with embarrassment. But a win anywhere is a win for all of us, so I was pretty thrilled when I first learned about that victory for America. Sure hope your district is a harbinger of good things to come.

Thanks for your kind words on the 'Hiatus' post.

I live in the 14th Congressional District in Illinois, that elected a man who is a Democrat & a scientist to Dennis Hastert's former seat. I've lived in the suburbs all my life. It's quite shocking to have my guy win. And he's already gotten to vote FOR ethics and AGAINST wire-tapping.

And Adam... you need to hone those negotiating skills before young Fonzie learns to talk.

FONZIE: Cookie?
ADAM: No, son, too close to dinner.
FONZIE:(puppy eyes, lip sticking out)
ADAM: Alright, but only three...
