New York! Just like I…
I’m in New York today (and tomorrow), a-visitin’ and a-drinkin’, but mainly to watch our good pal Ritch Duncan get a-hitched. And seeing the sister, the moms, and the little bundle of nephewage.
Tall buildings! Glamorous nightlife! Horrible, penetrating, soul-killing razorsharp hammertoforehead throatstripping COLD!
Yes, Los Angeles has apparently thinned my blood to the consistency of rose-tinted soap bubbles.

1This?! This isn’t COLD. COLD is what we had last week, when it was in the teens and twenties. Today is a palmy, balmy 33F in Danbury, and 37F in NYC. Spring cannot be far away.

2Yeah, Sharon, you’re right about spring. It seems to get here earlier and earlier each year. (A Global Warming rimshot here!)
On another topic, when Bush said his administration would be run like a business, I didn’t think he meant one of his businesses. This surge of money ($150 billion) he’s talking about using to prop up the economy, where is this money coming from? Bush says he won’t hear of raising taxes to fund it. You think Poppy is bailing out his thick-headed scion again? I knew they were rich, but….

3Watch yourself out there. I heard there’s some sort of giant monster stomping all over the city right now!

4Vell, today was supposed to be “Polar Bear Plunge” in Bemidji. I always missing to see a polar bear, so I bundle warmly and walked down to city docks. Ha! There was nothing but a bunch of crazily Swedes that took off their clothes and jumped into a hole in the ice. I tell you I was done pretty mad at those morons for scaring off the bears and I ja sure told them a thing or two!
Adam, it -4F today in Bemidji. Cold like that in the New York?

5Oh, yeah. Honk! Honk! Hahahaha. Honk! Honk! Honk!!, Adam. And “hello” to that crazy sister of yours and to the lovely lady that is your momma. Tell her I read all her books. Say this to her when there is no other else around. Tell her I cry at her books.

7Okay, here’s something for you to chew on before deciding what to eat for lunch today. Bird flu has hit for a fourth time since 2006 in India. No human to human transmission is reported, but…
I just hope Bush hasn’t run off all the inspired and dedicated middle management from NIH and replaced them with his flunkies. This one scares me.

8Hey dee, did you realize that former Senator and current Democratic Presidential candidate Mike Gravel is UU? But I guess the more relevant observation is that he is also coo coo.

9cooper — that may explain a lot. And I passed through your fair city twice in the last few days on my way to and back from Savannah. I would have stopped to say “hi” but the radio drama channel on XM was in the middle of a Green Hornet episode and I wanted to hear how it ended.
And as far as that $800 or whatever it is we’re all supposed to get to stimulate the economy, somewhere this weekend I heard it described as an advance on your tax refund for next year. If that’s so, then a lot of people are going to be surprised in 2009 when their refund check is significantly smaller. Of course, by that time the Democrats will be in charge and they’ll get all the blame. I really hope Nancy and Harry are reading the fine print in this.

10While it was snowing here in Durham, NC and chilly (by NC standards) I talked to my father in Iowa. I told him about how all the stores were out of milk and bread in anticipation of the winter weather. He laughed and told me it was -1 there. I am pretty sure got a cold just thinking about it.

11Payday advance as government economic policy. I love it. Maybe they could just privatize it to Amscot and let us pay 24% on the advance.
So how did the Green Hornet episode end, dee? I have to be where I can pick up Gainesville public radio to listen to old time radio of a Sunday evening. I guess at some point XM is the answer.

12Off topic, sort of. I think this best captures the media and the campaigns (although I do think there is a bias, namely the corporate editorial bias):
Why Horse Race Journalism Works for Journalists and Fails Us
By Jay Rosen
Just so you know, “the media” has no mind. It cannot make decisions. Which means it does not “get behind” candidates. It does not decide to oppose your guy… or gal. Nor does it “buy” this line or “swallow” that one. It is a beast without a brain. Most of the time, it doesn’t know what it’s doing.

14Well Kjell (nice rhyme!),
It’s now snowing, and by Wednesday it will be -13 again here in Southern Minny. Colder in Bemidji eh?
Adam, a fun thing to do when it’s this cold is get a pan of water boiling, then run outside and toss the water (not the pan) into the air. It explodes into steam.
That’s what we do for fun. Please help. Honk.

15Yay! Today is a wonderful day! -8 degrees this morning, and I finally found Fanatical Apathy again after two weeks of getting the following every time I tried to view the site:
Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Access denied for user ‘adameft’@'localhost’ (using password: YES) in /home/adameft/public_html/wp/wp-content/referrer-karma.php on line 635
check_referrer() error.
Warning: mysql_query() [function.mysql-query]: Access denied for user ‘adameft’@'localhost’ (using password: NO) in /home/adameft/public_html/wp/wp-content/referrer-karma.php on line 576
Warning: mysql_query() [function.mysql-query]: A link to the server could not be established in /home/adameft/public_html/wp/wp-content/referrer-karma.php on line 576
It turns out you can no longer access FA at http://fanaticalapathy.com. You now have to toss a www in there.

16Oh, hey, it’s January now, innit? I guess it’s actually been about a month of the above mysql errors instead of FA, not two weeks.

17Adam, as long as you are in the “Big Apple”, maybe you could confirm some things I’ve heard about it.
Is it true that it’s a “helluva” town? The Bronx is up and the Battery’s down? It’s also my understanding that the people there ride in “a hole in the ground”. Your research into these matters would be greatly appreciated.

18Those rumors might very well prove to be true, Dan, but let’s not forget that the bluest skies you’ve ever seen are in Seattle!

Dear Diary,
Talk about chutzpah (note to self - check the spelling of all Yiddish words.) - Tom DeLay made an interesting comment to Fox News the other day: “John McCain has done the most to hurt the GOP than any other elected official”. Well, sure….unless you consider Tom DeLay’s damage to the party. But I guess the Abramoff scandal has fallen off the radar, so Tom’s back in the fray and some people are gullible enough to listen to him. The fools!
Time for bed, diary. Maybe next time I can fill you in on the sweet deal I got from Gung Ho. I love that name.

23nato, I hate to tell you this, but I’m still finding FA at http://fanaticalapathy.com… in fact I’m looking at that URL in my browser even as I write this. Your browser must be possessed of a demon. Or something. Really impressive MySQL error though.

25It’s really a shame that the plan to privatize Social Security never got anywhere. Just imagine how loud the collective howl would be this morning from all those folks who had put their entire retirement in the hands of Wall Street. I bet you could have heard it on Jupiter.

26It was multiple browsers and computers, so I’d say the problem is somewhere on the server end. Or make that WAS. I was able to connect to http://fanaticalapathy.com today as well. And thanks, Tammy, for bringing up that great news about life here in the Idaho panhandle. Sure, we have our occasional kooks, but at least we haven’t had a cross burning or someone tossed on a bonfire because she looks like a Jew in almost a year. So things are looking up!

27If you’re using Firefox and get that MYSQL error, just hit the arrow at the right of the URL box. It’s gotten me here every time, no huhu.
Oh, it’s gotten into the 60s overnight out here. 4-blanket territory for we thin-blooded tropical isle dwellers.

28I’ll try the arrow, Linkmeister, although I’ve now found that I can usually get through if I prepend www to the url (or remove it if the db errors pop up when I am going to the www version already). I think what’s happening is that the Referrer-Karma plugin on Adam’s WordPress instance thinks that I am a malicious bot, but has not been fully configured correctly. So instead of the 403 error page with a link to FA that I should be getting, were I a bot (which I don’t think I am. Last time I stabbed myself, I bled), I get a page that just shows the MySQL connect errors. Either that or the Goddess of the Net is pissed at me for some reason. Aren’t the intertubes fun?
