Call it “Schrodinger’s Ball.” Or, yes, “Felberpalooza.” But the first ever get-together for this site’s denizens is going to happen, it seems. The official page for the gathering is right here. Are you on the bus? IS there a bus? What kind of bus?
A quick caveat: Yours truly, Adam, will no be able to be there for the entire weekend. More like 24 hours. The demands of my super new TV job has necessitated moving my book-oriented events to the weekends, and Labor Day, just a couple of weeks after the book’s launch, is no exception. So my guess is that I’ll be there from Saturday to Sunday of the weekend. [It’s a pretty educated guess as well…] And as I’ve gleaned from this here site over the past few months, it’s not actually all about me anyway (though I find that extremely painful to say. Ever.). It’s about all the fanathletes getting together, meeting, and carousing.
And I know it is very, very unbecoming for me to grouse about my latenight television-writing job interfering with the release of my first novel. I do realize that. Still, they’re two things I’ve wanted to see happen for… basically my entire life. So to have them coincide is both thrilling and…well… kind of inconvenient.
There. I said it.
Back to the ‘palooza, though. I’d love to use this thread to get a bit of a head count, make arrangements, etc. Grouseland needs to know. Murray will gladly answer any of your questions herein. And we’ll nail this down.
So… who’s in? Just raise your hands. No pushing.

1Me. I’m in. Over here. Yoo Hoo. The bald guy that’s jumping up and down and waving his arm to get your attention like those nerds in Jr. High who knew the answer to that question about Einstein’s Special Relativity Theory. Yeah me!. I’m in.
My kids will be in school or working and the wife says “Go already. Good riddance!” So, just me. Really looking forward to this.

2OK, so I’m waving only one arm and slapping the top of my shoulder with the other hand, even though it pales in comparison to said gesture sent my way by a really pissed NYC sanitation worker some four decades ago, but it’s all in fun. Count me in. Oh, yeah - I still have hair, which will help distinguish me from Cooper.

3I won’t know for sure until mid-August when I get my hospital rotation schedule. I *hate* it when school interfers with having fun. (I forgot about that part when I submitted my application.) Wonder if I can still pull all-nighters?
I do have the driving directions and can sleep in my car if I need to. I *really* hope to make it if only for a day or two.

5Damn! I was really hoping to make it, but I’ll be driving home from Idaho that weekend and can’t swing a trip out to the East coast. I’m going to miss meeting you all!
Maybe next year?

7Allison, I think the answer is a left coast version. We have a pretty good sized Bay Area contingent, it’s not too far from LA (hint hint to the TV-focussed person) and maybe Seattle Dan could come look for expansion opportunities now that we’ve lost Cody’s.

8Maybe next year’s event will be hosted at Adam’s Phat Palatial Mansion bought with the money that’s gonna start pouring in from his TV writing gig! Adam, how about Aaron Spelling’s place? Oh, wait, I heard that was never really on the market!

9I’ll be there. It gives me something to look forward to after getting back from the beach next Sunday.
And cooper, I’ve been to Maine in July and August and the ocean temp was STILL 42 degrees. Unlike the not-too-warm, not-too-cold waters off Topsail island.

11Woah. I’ve been following Tony’s campaign pretty closely (and saving up some money to send). I was part of the last democratic campaign that almost beat Bill Shuster in 2001, and I’d love to see that smarmy fat-assed used car salesman gone from Congress. It’s great to see he’s got the endorsement of Felberpalooza.

12dee, actually you’re quite correct about the ocean temperature - bone aching cold. I was, of course, referring to the temperature of the inland lakes, thousands of which were carved out by the last ice age. We’re on a lake in the middle of Maine near Augusta.
Topsail Island is a wonderful vacation spot. One of my good buddies has a place there and speaks very highly of it. Enjoy your time on the island. I look forward to seeing you at whatever this gathering will wind up being called on Labor Day weekend.

13Cody’s? We lost a Cody’s bookstore? Where? Where? Don’t tell me it’s the one on Telegraph Ave.
I really don’t think I can afford the plane tickets. I’d love to go, but I’m planning on airfare to Idaho to visit my future in-laws.

14Today was the last day of business for the Cody’s on Telegraph. It’s lamentable, but I guess Andy Ross, the owner, couldn’t make it work anymore. I haven’t been to Berkeley in years, but I hear Telegraph has changed much and not for the better.
Sorry to be the one tell you, Tess.

18Some of them bring it on themselves, alas. I heard about a book on This American Life back in May. Called a prominent local independent bookstore (not Cody’s) and asked them to order it. Waited a month, called, got a semi-answer, waited two more weeks and called again. They really weren’t sure of the status. While I was on the phone with them, I looked on Amazon and they had 17 copies available. Told them that I’d made a conscious decision to buy from an independent bookseller rather than go to Amazon, so it was kinda frustrating to think that I could’ve had the book in hand six weeks ago if I’d have gone to the evil empire. I don’t mind waiting an extra week or so to support a local business, but…

19Yes, and a Clean Well-Lighted Place for Books (San Francisco) has closed too. I thought I saw that a smaller local chain had taken the domain name or the location or something; but the last items I see from Google just say, closing down.
Telegraph Avenue hasn’t improved over the years, Dan, you’re right about that; and the Telegraph Ave. Cody’s was always hampered by the fact that you couldn’t park a car anywhere near it (by “near” I mean “within 6 blocks”). And it’s as much as your life is worth to ride the 40 Telegraph bus. I’ve read that the only reason Moe’s is still afloat is it’s Internet business (and the fact that they own the building).
What’s really frustrating about siobhan’s story is that the idiots could have ordered it from Amazon for her and had it sooner than they did…

21hedera, internet business has become an important compotent for us independent stores. I do sell books online at biblio.com and abebooks.com. We have to.
Heard also about Clean Well-Lighted Place… my understanding is that the owner is opening a store near the Art Museum.
And Siobhan, your story isn’t good. Most of us independents would tell you why it’s difficult to find the book you want. Sometimes publishers and distributors run out of stock and we need to wait for reprints. Which is easy enough to tell a customer. Or if it is out-of-print, it takes a bit longer to obtain. Again, easy enough to tell a customer. The store you contacted sounds a bit lazy.

22In self defense, Dan, I use local bookstores when they carry what I want, which is kind of idiosyncratic. Fortunately for my tastes in detective stories and sci-fi, there’s Dark Carnival, just a few blocks away, with the most astounding collection of both, paper and hardback, that you can imagine. (Plus rubber spiders and bats, robot toys, inflatable weird objects, etc. etc.) They have my regular business; but nobody in Berkeley carries my other passion, Regency romance bodice-rippers. Too low-brow for Cody’s, I checked several times; had to get ‘em from a used bookstore in Walnut Creek, next to Rossmoor; I get them from Amazon when I can’t get to Walnut Creek. Amazon has no brow to speak of.

23Dan, I think disorganized rather than lazy. And my book is now enroute - still from an independent. (Adam, I’ll be getting yours from a local as well. Hope that it doesn’t harm your Amazon rating.)

24Welcome all!
This gives me an idea of the number I can expect. I’m also guessing that I will be picking up local WWDTM fans.
Let me know if you need help with transportation etc.
What ideas do we have for activities? A WWDTM mock show? Favorite Power Point Presentations? Correcting radio grammar? Demolition Kayaks, well lubricated with MM or Yingling Beer?
Only 7 weeks away!

28Speaking of local bookstores I wanted to plug a family member’s bookstore- The Inkwell Bookstore in Falmouth, MA on Cape Cod. They just celebrated their first year. I’m on the other extreme coast so I haven’t made it to the store in person but I visit it virtually every week. If you ever on the cape give them a visit.

29Siobhan,
A Left Coast version of the Event Not Called Felberpalooza is definitely in order. There are a lot of us out here, including Adam himself.
Regarding bookstores, I’m lucky that we have a good independent one in Santa Cruz. Bookshop Santa Cruz is an excellent store, and I’ve never had any difficulty either ordering or waiting for books. They’ve always been able to tell me exactly when to expect a book to arrive. Several years ago a Crown Books went in directly across the street from Bookshop. This being Santa Cruz, there was a big backlash and Crown went away after a very short tenure. Local independent business 1, big chain 0. Now there’s a Border’s down the street from Bookshop that doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon. Seems like Bookshop is always busier, though.

37Allison, tess, siobhan, hedera, and maybe Mary - I blow a kiss in your general direction, which is a better deal than what you get from Monty Python, as we all know. We’re sure going to miss ya. You’re right, it’s a shame you have to travel so far. This should be like a touring party, one year on the best coast, the next year on the west coast, the following year in enemy territory (Texas), and so on.
waterfowler, you said early on that you wouldn’t be able to make it. Sorry, man. You’re missing a great party, with free beer! 53Murray - What are the choices for finding a room near your place that is somewhere between palacial and a tent? I hope it isn’t too late to find an open room. I bet the demand is heavy, eh? I will only need a room for Saturday night. I will have a car there, so distance isn’t such a big deal.
