Rhonda,

(I'm not making this up) I once dropped by a friend's house to find a ring of countertop high pasta sauce encircling the entire room - and my friend. He was pulverizing part of the sauce in his blender, which he had neglected to tighten properly. And he wasn't even drunk. For a long time I couldn't eat spaghetti without bursting out laughing.

One time, my roommates and I came home to find our kitchen a mess and blood spattered all over everything. The other roommate was nowhere to be found and so we, in a panic, followed the trail of blood down the backstairs and over to the neighbors' house, where we found said missing roommate. Apparently she was making dinner, broke a glass, maimed her finger, and ran over to the neighbors for help. It put me off spaghetti sauce for months.

Johnnyboy, remember that the Canadian health system is run by Canadians, a reasonable and intelligent bunch, by and large. Any U.S. single payer health system would be run by us, as in "we have met the patient and he is us" (apologies to Walt Kelly), and there seems to be something in the American psyche that makes it necessary for us to produce reams of forms for ourselves to fill out...

siobhan = shuh-VAHN, right?
I subscribe George Carlin's dictum on Irish Conciousness:
when the Irish are concious, they're really quite OK.

OK,siobhan, how about tits on a boar hog? That's the Southern macho version of that particular saying.

Off topic rumination: the first time I saw siobhan, I read it siobahn, and wondered what kind of highway a sio was. A sciobahn could be a knowledge highway, that thing all of us evolutionists and other demonic souls keep trying to travel.

Anyway, now I'm off trying to imagine boar's breast with a brie sauce. You think you're confused...

I don't get to deal with medicare. It does get funded since old people vote. I get medicaid, recently cut even more, which purports to cover crippled and indigent kids. It's obvious they don't vote.
I'm upset the drug companies got a pass from government price fixing under medicare (and consequently, everything else). Hospitals & providers are controlled, but I don't see it for pharmaceuticals.
And why are they allowed to advertise prescription drugs on TV? Do any of you find that helpful or desirable?

Matt,
You're comparing apples and oranges. There's a big difference between an agency that has to handle disasters (which are by nature unpredictable, and strike in infinitely variable ways and places) and something like a health system, where the needs are much more quotidian and predictable.

Matt,

Have you forgotten FEMA under James Lee Witt during the Clinton administration? The fault lies not in the federal government, it lies quite specifically with GWB and the national Republican machine. Medicare as a federal agency has a good track record.

The people to fear are the people who destroyed FEMA and are hell bent to destroy Medicare, not the people who brought them to us. Now if the Republicans continue to own the federal government, you are justified in fearing everything that will be visited on us.

And don't expect anything good from "moderate" Republicans. They are more impotent than Democrats, and essentially as useless as tits on a chicken.
