There is nothing minor about birdshot in the face and neck at 30 yards, if it was that far, which would mean Cheney was firing pretty much straight out. So the guy went into the brush and had returned without yelling "I'm back," and the secret service didn't notice there was another person in Cheney's line of fire? Story still doesn't really make sense. And intensive care for an inconvenience? Yeah, right.
