So, you’re going to be in LA sometime during the next five weeks? Why, that’s terrific news! And what’s that you say? You’re in need of a distinctly different and entertaining theatrical experience? Really?
I think I can help.
My spouse, the lovely Jeanne Simpson, just opened “Reckless,” the decidedly off-kilter Christmas-themed play by Craig Lucas.

I was there on opening night, and my completely unbiased opinion is that it’s a tremendously good play and that Jeanne is superb. She plays all six of the psychologists that our heroine visits during the course of the play, and… well, I’m just so proud. *sniff*
Craig Lucas, you may remember, is the writer of “Blue Window,” “Prelude to a Kiss,” and recent Tony winner “The Light in the Piazza.” “Reckless” is one of his earliest plays, concerning a woman who is informed (with regret) by her husband on Christmas Eve that he has taken out a contract on her life, and that she’d probably ought to flee. She does…
You can get all the information you need at www.atwistedchristmas.com.
Tell your friends! Tell your family! Tell yourself. It was a great opening weekend, but as you might imagine, LA isn’t exactly the “Theater Town” that New York is. So yes, there are plenty of seats still available. On any given night, I’m likely to be in one or two of them, so make sure you let me know you’re a-comin’ and say hi…
And if you’re looking for Jeanne and the description of her characters and the program and previous pictures here and the photo in the lobby aren’t enough… why, here’s one of her new headshots:

Awwwwwwww. And tomorrow’s her birthday, too!
See you there, I hope. The Funny and the Pointed will return to this site soon. But today I wanted to take the time to dote. Doe dote dote dote dote…

3Congrats on the new show. Forgive me if I’m not familiar with the standard stage nomenclature, whatever else that indicates my very best wishes for a long and successful run, please consider it offered here.
The new headshot of Ms. Simpson is stunning; simply breathtaking.
That’s all I can say.

5Adam,
On seeing the picture of your lovely wife, I immediatley thought of a favorite saying of Florida’s great former governor Lawton Chiles: “It’s a pretty poor sort of man who can’t marry above himself.” Looks like you met Lawton’s First Law of Matrimony.
Wish I could attend the play, but it’s a long, long way from the Green Swamp to LA (both literally and figuratively).

6Adam, hubba, hubba! My, what a lovely young lady you have married. To find out her good fortune in being a fellow Saggitarian, well the heavens are definitely smiling on her. Good luck to Jeanne in the play and all future undertakings. My, what a lovely young lady… oh, I wrote that already, didn’t I? Sorry. WOWSA!!!

7Oh, while I’m thinking about it, give Jeanne one of those Dagwood/Blondie gravity-defying kisses in my honor.

8Congratulations! That sounds like a great role and great opportunity!
Glad to hear hear you guys are finding your success in LA…
Adam - Amazon says the book is due out next August. Do we really have to wait that long? I need it for summer reading.

10Congratulations to the lovely and long-suffering Jeanne! And many happy returns of tomorrow. She shares her birthday with Wally Cox, Dave Brubeck, Agnes Moorehead, Ira Gershwin, Lynn Fontanne and Joyce Kilmer, among others.
And since you’ve got three weeks to shop,Adam, just a reminder that the tradtional third anniversary gift is leather. I’m sure you can come up with SOMETHING appropriate.

11Oh! I was so in L.A. three weeks ago. Did the Getty and stuff. So sorry to miss this.
To the Lovely Jeanne Simpson, then. And happy birthday.
And Adam, wowsa for doing this blog brilliantly and consistently these years–quite a feat. You must have wanted to pack it in. Maybe you know how many lives you affect by keeping on. Good on you.
Um, really. You like helped me stay sane and be nice (o.k. civilized) to people and believe a little and have, like, faith in basic human decency and intelligent thought. Oh, no, wait–that was ID right? The great Lobster? And there I was being grateful to you through and through.

12Yes, she’s lovely and undoubtedly talented. Too bad she couldn’t find a competent photographer. That shot is completely off-center! And is that a school bus in the background?

13You lucky, lucky, lucky BASTARD!
Jeannie, finally the big A has brought you outta the shadows (well, blogoscopically speaking, anyway) to bloom in the light of our laptops around the world. OK, it’s only a photo (nice photo too, despite the school bus), but it’s more than we usually get!
Best luck with the play, break both legs, and we won’t even think about mentioning the M****** word…
Coop - whoa, dude, she’s married! To Adam, yet. (Mind you, I know exactly how you feel - Adam’s good-looking, but not that good looking… That is, er… [sound of hole being dug deeper and deeper]). But you’re right - lovely to see some sparkle!

14Congrats to Jeanne on the opening of the new show! Makes me wish I were in LA. I met Jeanne at the WWDTM show in Pacific Grove a year ago, and she really is as lovely as her picture.
Adam, you’re so cute when you dote!

15Go Jeanne! Now that she’s played a therapist/psychiatrist, maybe she can manipulate casting directors to hire her for other gigs, or TV execs into keeping her future TV gigs (I mean, they’re TV execs — how hard can it be?).

16Adam,
My children and I appreciated Jeanne very much on Wishbone and it seems that she has only become lovelier in the intervening years. Best of wishes to her in her new production and many happy returns on her birthday.

18Pete, thanks pal, I needed that. I’m always making a fool of myself around beautiful, drop-dead gorgeous redheads. It’s a massive character flaw that I’m battling to this day; happily married, though I am. Of course it’s nothing I would ever act on, but I can still admire from afar. Okay, I’ll shut up now. Do you really think Adam’s attractive? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of him; well as an adult and out from under that purple headband.

19Check out Susie’s blog, Pete. The pictures may still be up–the picture with the caption that begins “A Felber!” has Adam in it, I believe. First figure on the left.

I too met Jeanne in Pacific Grove and she’s really really nice…and Adam is too!
Adam, got the pipeline from the Maker’s Mark distillery installed yet?

25Cooper,
Springsteen sings about it. Along with the Boss, Adam lives it. And for reasons known only to Lobster, I lucked into a gorgeous head of red hair bedecking one terrific human being. While it is the personality beneath that hair that matters far, far more than the color of said hair, you are absolutely justified in being smackdown clobbered by a dropdead beautiful redhead. Why? Who the hell knows (or cares)?
Ann
December 6, 2005 at 8:02 pm
26Um, Billy? Did I mention that I’m also a redhead?

27David, my observation is that regardless of the relative attractiveness of a given couple, the man usually marries up, all other things being considered.

28Ann,
I’m not Irish and don’t have a charming accent, but I am close to Seattle and a fellow Felbernaut. I managed to get tickets to the Town Hall show of “Says You!” last month. It was a great time.

If your lovely and talented family is still keeping you busy, you could post this verbatim:

No doubt most here have already cringed. It’s just so wrong on so many levels. Especially the Volvo exception….

33David, Cooper, don’t get me wrong - my old, wrinkly, tattered heart was first busted wide open by a redhead, and I’ve never gotten the colour out of my blood. Sigh.
She Who Must Be Obeyed has slowly grown to understand my penchant for auburn, but I’m only ‘lowed to look. No touchee. If I touch, I understand my goolies will be torn off and wedged forcibly into my oesophagus. (I personally think that might be a poor way to end a lovely partnership). So, like you, I appreciate like hell, and that’s it. Mind you, She Whose Every Word Heralds Eternal Sunshine gets a free “All You Can Appreciate” ticket too. Fair’s fair. Plus, it gives me some goals to aspire to : watch out, Rupert Everett (hummana hummana hummana)
