Joe Scarborough offered this up on Friday. It’s worth quoting it in the bigger font (thanks, Atrios):
Killing won’t make headlines
What would happen if terrorists launched a killing spree and no one noticed?
That’s the question the supporters of Zarqawi must have been asking themselves this week between Thursday massacres and Friday prayers.
Eighteen civilians were blown up yesterday and the world hardly noticed.
Suicide bombings. How 2004…
…The terrorists may still be killing a handful of Iraqi civilians. But all they are doing is strengthening their enemies in the United States and all of Iraq.
It is time for a new strategy. This killing thing just isn’t making headlines anymore.”
It’s an interesting idea. Scarborough, a “reporter” of sorts, is pointing out a brilliant new media strategy for helping the American cause in the War on Terror:
Don’t report stuff.
Or if you report it, don’t make a really big deal about or else (you guessed it! All together now:) The Terrorists Have Won!
It’s definitely the tack that the news networks have been taking when it comes to Death and Iraq. If you watch TV, you’ll see that the news continues to deem Michael Jackson to be much more important than any Americans killed in Iraq (dead Iraqis aren’t even close). If you go to the MSNBC homepage, you will not see anything about the three of our soldiers who’ve died in the past few hours - you’d have to click a link that promises to tell you about a rescue operation, and even that headline is given lesser billing than a Florida murderer confessin’, the Cardinals getting ready to start selecting a new Pope, and a surprisingly large wave hitting a cruise ship and killing… nobody.
Joe’s right - the terrorists’ strategy of killing people to make headlines is definitely not working. They’ve managed to kill 24 people in the past day, including four Americans, and the press is prudently downplaying the fact lest they offer Aid and Comfort to the enemy. It might be somewhat hard for the parents of an American soldier to find that their son’s death will be treated as little more than a footnote, that his name will likely never be mentioned on TV, that his face will probably not be seen by the country he died fighting for, and that any details of the life he led will never be talked about… but that’s the way Joe Scarborough n’ friends wanna play it. Because anti-war freaks are just panting to turn this killing into “news” and aid the terrorist cause. But they’re not gonna get by the frontline defenses of the news desks, not anymore. Never again.
So I have an idea…
Let’s acknowledge that the liberal media made a colossal, dangerous mistake on September 11th, 2001. They were so quick to jump on the “story” of a terrorist attack that they didn’t stop to think about it. So they went ahead and saturated the airwaves, printed gaudy headlines, and made a big, silly deal of the whole thing.
Which was exactly what the terrorists wanted.
Even the President fell for it, treating the World Trade Center’s destruction and the 3000 deaths as “big news,” speaking to the nation about “an act of war.” The media could have been reporting legitimate stories like Dennis Rodman’s boating arrest, Jennifer Lopez’ wedding, and Mariah Carey’s comeback from a mental breakdown. These things really happened back in September of 2001, and the media took their eye of the ball. Instead, they played right into the terrorists’ hands.
Let’s not make that mistake again. When September 11th rolls around again this year let’s keep the story down to a passing mention and maybe half a column on page B23. If we continue to treat our enemies slaughtering us (or our soldiers or our allies or their children) as news, we’re just encouraging ‘em. Our best weapons in this war are our ignorance and our apathy, and nobody but the news media can ensure that these are maintained.
So let’s mark 9/11 this year with stories of celebrity sex scandals, backwoods rapists, splashy legal battles, and those amazing “culture wars.” Maybe some big items about the approaching World Series. Only that way can we truly honor the memory of the fallen by ignoring them completely.
We’ve got to get started now, though, or we might fall into the trap of remembering 9/11. Write your local newspapers and cable providers to get this thing in motion. And tell ‘em Joe sent you.

1“truly honor the memory of the fallen soldiers by completely ignoring them” - I mean we already forbid coverage of the flag-draped coffins, and the Yellow Rose eschews their funerals - and we’ve consistently ignored the Iraqi civilians who’ve died, which was the first step in refusing to play into the hands of the terrorists and their collateral-damage-hugging liberal apologists. So this certainly seems to me to be the next logical step in defeating terrorism. Thanks, Joe, for the neozen wisdom.

2I’m willing to stop the mention of 11 Sept. if it means we get to repeal the Patriot Act, give legal trials to those at Guantanamo or else let them go, and bring some actual intelligence to the war on terror. I’d stop the mention of it if I could stop the political gains it has brought people.

3Those damn liberals, it’s obvious that all they wish to do is glorify terrorist. It’s their loathing of America that makes them want to report American deaths.
But don’t worry, we have a plan to do away with them and because WE love America, you won’t be hearing about it.

5Oh boy! Now all the people with “Support our Troops” bumper stickers can scrape those damn things off!
Actually, I want to see them taking razor blades to their beloved giant trucks and SUVs. I REALLY want to see them taking razor blades to their paint jobs.

6HEY! Not everyone with a “support our troops” ribbon on their vehicle is a ditto-head republican!!
:)
Well said, Adam. As I have ranted and raved on this subject for months, it is sad and sickening to see the *#!$#*!$ Right Wing actually ENCOURAGE the down-playing of our servicemen and women dying for no real reason other than oil, money, oil, republican stupidity, oil…..
sigh.

7Thank you Adam. I feel much better for ranting at the “liberal” (not) Sunday paper that had info about how the next Pope was to be chosen under the mast head but info on Iraq and the number of soldiers who had died were relegated to page 9A. I suspect it wasn’t buried further because the other sections didn’t cover ‘international news’- except the travel section.
And don’t get me started about the network non-coverage of what is happening. (Grrrrrrrrrrrrr…)

8If I can respectifully disagree… I think that the growing media silence over Iraq mayhem has less to do with support of the government than about being the usual “coverage fatigue” that occurs for all protracted and basically unchanging stories. Mainstream news concerns itself with exactly that, new stuff - and sadly, there is nothing new about people dying by the dozen in Iraq…
It’s become a kind of sick numbers game; while in the beginning one dead american might merit a headline, now you need a certain threshold number to make it newsworthy (right now I’d say 5 is the critical number). And since 1 american is worth about 5 iraqis, less than 25 Iraqis exploding is not quite a story.

9I’m going to take the Scarborough approach to solving this longstanding problem: get my own cable access show (although it may be higher-rated than MSNBC) squint a lot, pick and lose arguments with strangers, write columns that look like they received a D+ from a 6th grade English teacher, and have my lips removed.

14We already have donor fatigue, media fatigue, why not terror fatigue? Lobster knows I’m tired of hearing about all we do to stop Terrists, to fight The War On Terrr, etc. So why not stop mentioning acts of terrism.
Or maybe - and this is just plain sick - the news media have quietly expanded the definition of terrr. So Michael Jackson is terrrising chillun, the Cardinals are terrrising the new Pope…

15Adam - all I can say is “Amen.” In the secular sense.
Johnnyboy - I respectfully disagree with your respectful disagreement. During the “Vietnam Conflict” the news, both press and TV, offered extensive coverage for years.
I think the fault lies with the careful “embedding” (”in bed-ing?”) of reporters, the fact they are pretty much kept in the (relative) safety of the Green Zone, reporting only what military briefers tell them, and most importantly, that media, especially TV, is now a strictly profit-oriented enterprise, offering whatever draws the most rubes to the set. And in today’s culture, that means MJ and some alien having Clinton’s love-child.
Another blogger said “George W Bush is dragging America down into its own Dark Ages.” Ignorance and superstition suits the neocons and Fundie leaders just fine. And co-incidentally, it’s good for profits!

16While I understand what you’re saying, I feel you need to rethink some of your comments. As far as forgetting about 9/11/01, I think you can go straight to hell. What you seem to forget is that it wasn’t just 3,000 civilians that died, it was 343 of my firefighting brothers, and 78 police and port authority officers. I’m a firefighter from Wisconsin and I gotta tell you, your comment took their selfless act and flushed it right down the crapper. What you also don’t realize is that most people DID forget about 9/11, but for firefighters across the world, we NEVER forget it. While our job is inherently dangerous, we don’t expect to die on the job; all we want to do his help those that we serve and come home at the end of the day to our families. After 9/11, those 343 firefighters and 78 law enforcement officers will never get to see their families again. All you see is the politics; you need to open up your eyes and look at the bigger picture. THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES TO SAVE THE LIVES OF OTHERS! But they’re not soldiers, so I guess they don’t count. And while we firefighters don’t ask to be called heroes, we are given that honor by the citizens we serve. I will concede that this war is being fought for underhanded reasons, but the Iraqi citizens who are not terrorists were being killed by Hussein, and our soldiers put a stop to Saddam’s murderous reign. We may not agree with Bush’s real reasons for starting this war, but our troops still deserve our support. Its easy for you to play armchair quarterback while we (firefighters, law enforcement, and military alike) are risking our lives to protect yours. Until you get out from behind your desk and put your life on the line for someone else on a regular basis, keep your mouth shut and stick to writing about things you ACTUALLY know about (I couldn’t find any sort of bio about you on this site, so I’m guessing you have a desk job or something similar). But I’m sure you’ll brush this commentary off, make some insulting comment about how I’m ignorant, moronic, etc, etc, and go back to doing your “superior” job in your ivory tower. To be fair, on the odd chance you actually have a job that requires manual labor, you may disregard the related comments made earlier in my statement. After all, contrary to our stereotype, not all Wisconsinites are close-minded, ignorant, uneducated hicks. In closing, I will say this: you don’t honor the memory of a fallen bystander or hero by forgetting them, you honor them by taking action to ensure they didn’t die in vain.
