“President Bush said on Saturday the United Nations had a last chance to prove its relevance by adopting a resolution the United States will propose that could pave the way for war on Iraq.”
- from Reuters
Like that shady store down the street that has been having semi-annual Going Out of Business Sales for the past decade, President Bush continues to issue ticking-clock ultimatums to the world at large. The difference here is that when you ignore the store’s advertising, they don’t send a salesmen to your house to to drop off a blender and forcibly remove $23.99 from your wallet.
For a brief history of Bush’s Resistance-is-Futile brand of diplomacy, you can do a simple Google search under “Bush ‘last chance’.” It turns up 59,000 results.
And yes, they all appear to be relevant. Happy reading.

4If Bush has decided to make the UN irrelevant unless it continues to act as a rubber stamp for the United States, isn’t the UN then *already* irrelevant?
On another note, congratulations on winning today’s edition of Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me!

6input Clinton last chance and find that you get as many results- since 1998, nice to see that we finally have a president that has the balls to do something about it.

7“clinton last chance” gets only about 18K -”sale ‘last chance’ gets nearly 80,000 - “war last chance” gets 117K. Are they all relevant? Probably not, but it’s another way to not work some more!
oh yeah, “tom waites” “last chance” only gets 10 - rats, i was hoping that would be more instructive!

10justme:
When you do the search for Clinton with “last chance” in quotation marks (the way I did it for Bush), it turns up about 17,000 hits. And many of those are not relevant. They are often articles about Gore, or analysts saying that Clinton has his last chance to do this or that - NOT Clinton-issued ultimatums.
[By the way, the use of quotation marks in the search is important - without ‘em you get a lot more junk, as the words “last” and “chance” don’t have to be consecutive. Incidentally, such a search for Bush turns up nearly a million results.]

11I’ve been listening to Bush’s coming “last chance” at the UN, and I’m reminded of the movie “1776″, where Ben Franklin convinces Adams to let someone else propose independence, because he’s “obnoxious and disliked”. Seems to me there would be more chance of multilateral action if *someone else* got up and proposed force, instead of the US continuously pushing the war.

13well
I’m not very fond of bush
but
instead of just talking malice about him
i decided to trust in him…
I’m sure he has a plan
but you know what i think … there are people around him that pushes for this war more … they are the same people that pushed it when bush sr was president … and Colin Powell was there but he opposes it
and VP is one of them
and the other guy is Jewish and the other i don’t know he’s just old
bush has to finish what his father didn’t or couldn’t
the hawks had no change with clinton
but they have a change with bush now…
they were very angry with the way the war ended years ago…so
i’m thinking no more would be the best

16Searched: Bush Iraq “Last Chance” using Google’s News Search. There are 1,970 entries (although many appear to be repeats of the same wire service arcticle(s).
The earliest of the 1,970 entries is from Feb 13.
Not sure if these means anything, just thought I’d throw more fuel on the bonfire.
PS For the record, there are 3,160 entries for Iraq “last chance.” The earliest of these is Feb 18
