Chapter vii
1. And it came to pass that Joe did travel upon the land with Albert, as his second. 2. And there Joe saw many things that were new to him, for he had not before traveled upon the whole of the land, having dwelt all his days in the land of Connecticut, east of the river Hudson. 4. And Joe looked upon the land, and the people there, and they visited him with great gifts, both soft and hard. And Joe saw that it was good.
Chapter viii
12. And then came upon them the Time of the Counting. 13. But all was not well in the land, for it had been arranged that many went Uncounted in the Land of Jeb, and the people there did cry out, but their voices were heeded not. 14, And Joe did look upon this wickedness, and he called to God, saying, "Forgive them, Lord, for they know exactly what they do."
Chapter xi
1. And it came to pass that the Time of the Voting did come again. 2. And the Lord said unto Joe, "Behold! For Albert runs not, and the land is in great need, and therefore, Joe, must thou seek the Office that I have provided for thee." 3. And Joe was amazed, saying, "Lord, I cannot win, for I am a Jew of the Chosen People, and the people, for the most part, are not." 4. And the Lord said, "Nay, Joe, for thou art my child and worship me, and they art my children and worship me as well, and this shall they know of thee." 5. And Joe said unto the Lord, "But Lord, there is the matter of thine Son, whom they worship and I do not. What is the deal with that?" 6. And the Lord said, "Joe, it is complicated." And Joe said, "Perhaps, Lord, thou wouldst feel better if thou told me the truth." 7. And the Lord waxed wroth and said, "Is it thine custom to pry into your Lord’s personal life? Do I ask thee to explain thine family? Why must thou be such a Nosy Parker?" 8. And Joe fell on his face, and begged forgiveness, and gave thanks to the Lord, saying, "Yes, Lord, I will Run."
Chapter xii
15. And so Joe made haste to the land of Iowa, and stayed there awhile, and spoke to the people. 16. And the people listened not to Joe, for he was strict, and stern, and spoke of War, and railed against the violence of the games of the children, and in many ways sounded not like one of the tribe of Democrats, but like the King whom they loved not.
Chapter xiv
8. And the Way was hard, for the people heeded Joe not. And Joe cried out to the Lord, saying, "God, why have they forsaken me? Have I not treated them with kindness? Why do my numbers fall so low?" 9. And God spoke, saying, "Joe, thou needst only to loosen up a bit." 10. And Joe said unto the Lord, "No, Lord, for how can I rest when so much wickedness exists in Your world?" 11. And the Lord replied, saying, "Whatever, Joe." And the Lord did make an Excuse to go elsewhere.
Chapter xv
10. And Joe complained further as his numbers multiplied not, saying, "Nay, Lord, they like me not for I am a Jew and not like them, that is why they heed me not." 11. And God said unto Joe, "No, Joe, it is not that. And thou hast already done many great works, and already the people have shed many preconceptions and prejudices in light of your works." 12. And Joe beseeched the Lord for some Sign or Example of this. And the Lord hemmed and hawed, but Joe beseeched him again for some evidence of conquered prejudice. 13. And finally the Lord sighed, and said unto Joe, "Well, thou hast singlehandedly defeated the stereotype that Jews are without exception Funny and Interesting. Thou hast certainly put that one to rest!" 14. And there was silence, and then a great Beeping. And the Lord departed, saying, "Lo! Joe, for I have another call." 15. And Joe grumbled, for he loved neither the Lord’s sarcasm nor Prayer Waiting…
